Air Terjun Madakaripura is a waterfall located in Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. The waterfall is well-known for its beauty and is considered a sacred site in Javanese culture. History, Mystery, and Myth of Air Terjun Madakaripura

The name Madakaripura comes from three words, namely Mada, which is taken from the name of an elephant. Kari has a sense of heritage. Meanwhile, pura means prayer or meditation. So, Madakaripura means an elephant that died while praying.
According to local residents, Patih Gajah Mada spent the rest of his life at this waterfall. He even stayed here until he passed away. He stayed here to reflect on what he had done. Mahapatih Gajahmada may have gone to this place when he was removed from his position as Mahapati.
The dismissal happened because Gajahmada killed hundreds of people in the Sunda Galuh kingdom. The story of Mahapatih Gajahmada is reinforced by the presence of Gajahmada statues in the area.
The statue of Patih Gajah Mada is located right in the parking area of this place. So, when you park your bike here, you will find a statue of Patih Gajah Mada.

Madakaripura Gajah Mada is a waterfall that can be considered an eternal waterfall. Here, you can still find water without any dryness, where the static flow does not increase or decrease during the rainy or dry season.
When visiting here, it is important to be a little careful. If tourists have bad intentions, it is believed that it can bring disaster to them. On the other hand, if tourists have good intentions, they will receive blessings from the pure heart.
Another myth is that you must return before 2 pm. The locals also believe that if it is past 2 pm, rain will suddenly occur, causing the water surface to rise and endangering those still in the area.
Another myth from this area is about the waterfall’s ability to make people youthful. Whether this is true or not, it remains a myth.

In addition to being famous for its legendary myths and history, this waterfall is also the highest waterfall on the island of Java, with a height of around 200 meters. Madakaripura waterfall is also the second-highest waterfall in Indonesia, second only to the Ponot waterfall in North Sumatra, which is 250 meters high. Wow, this is really interesting!

Madakaripura Waterfall is located approximately 1000 meters above sea level. At this height, the surroundings around the waterfall are cool and lush. Everyone will be mesmerized by the unique ambiance, which is different from other waterfalls.
Interestingly, this waterfall is 200 meters high and has a cave-like shape that is approximately 25 meters wide. The waterfall is round in shape. Before reaching the main waterfall, tourists will be greeted by four other waterfalls, one of which is in the shape of a hollow.
The area around the waterfall offers beautiful green scenery, created by the abundance of water falling from above. It is indeed a perfect place for photography and photo sessions.

According to local beliefs, the basin at the Madakaripura Waterfall is the place where Gajahmada reached moksha (salvation). Geographically, the waterfall is located at the end of a relatively deep valley, at the foot of the Tengger Mountains.
The waterfall descends as a centrifugal radial flow, spreading out from a single point. If you look closely, the waterfall expands, like a rain shower. It is very impressive, especially when the sun shines on the cluster of water droplets.
The beauty of this area is not only visible in the direct flow of water from above, but the water is also designed to create a flow with an impressive blue color. You will surely be amazed by the water.
In addition, the sound of the waterfall is believed to calm tourists. The sound creates waves that can have a dramatic effect on brain waves.

Location Address and Route
The location address of this area is Dusun Branggah, Desa Negororejo, Kecamatan Lumbang, Kabupaten Probolinggo. You can use private vehicles or public transportation to reach this area.
For those who want to use public transportation, you can start from Probolinggo terminal. From this terminal, take public transportation to Lumbung Village. Then, transfer to transportation from Lumbung to Bromo. Well, here you can get off at the entrance to the waterfall.
With private vehicles, tourists can use the Probolinggo – Bromo via Tongas route. From there, you will find the Sukapura intersection. Then turn right towards the warehouse. Once you reach Lumbung, direct your vehicle to Pasar Lumbang. Then turn right.
After arriving at this waterfall, you have to walk back to the location point. The journey takes about 20 minutes with super realistic obstacles. Note that this area is often closed during the rainy season. This is due to frequent flooding in the area.

Passengers who want to use public transportation should be aware that the travel time is slightly longer than by private car.

The entrance fee to this area is quite cheap, only 11,000 rupiahs. This includes a parking fee of Rp 5,000 for cars and Rp 3,000 for tourists traveling by motorized vehicles.
